After years of answering this question from Indian travelers, our Sky Journey Tours team — living in Da Nang, Vietnam — gives you the honest, region-specific answer that generic travel websites miss. Vietnam's weather is completely different in the north versus the south, and the right timing makes an enormous difference to your experience.
Why Vietnam Weather Is Complicated
Vietnam stretches 1,650 km from Hanoi in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south. It sits across tropical and subtropical climate zones with the seasons running at different times in different regions. When Da Nang is dry and sunny, Hanoi might have winter mist. When Phu Quoc is perfect beach weather, Da Nang might have typhoon risk. This geographic reality means there is always somewhere beautiful in Vietnam — but you need to know where and when.
Da Nang and Central Vietnam — February to August
Our home base in Da Nang has reliable sunshine from February through August — seven months of excellent weather with temperatures between 24-33°C. My Khe Beach is at its most beautiful, Ba Na Hills has clear skies for perfect Golden Bridge photos, and Hoi An's streets are dry and walkable.
- March-April: Absolute best months. Cool, dry, clear skies, calm turquoise sea. Not yet peak season so hotels are 20-30% cheaper than January.
- May-June: Excellent — peak beach season. Perfect timing for Indian school holidays. Slightly hotter (30-35°C) but thoroughly enjoyable.
- July-August: Hot and humid (32-37°C) but still dry. Some afternoon clouds. Ba Na Hills is cooler due to altitude — a welcome escape from city heat.
- September-November: Avoid Central Vietnam. Typhoon season. Hoi An floods in October-November — we have had clients stranded for extra days. Do not plan this region during these months.
- December-January: Cooler (20-24°C), occasionally cloudy or rainy. Beach swimming fine but water sports limited. Hoi An mild flooding risk in November-December.
Hanoi and Ha Long Bay — October to April
North Vietnam has four distinct seasons — unusual in Southeast Asia. Autumn (October-November) and Spring (March-April) are outstanding.
- October-November: Our favourite time for Ha Long Bay. Clear skies, calm seas, 20-25°C — ideal for overnight cruises. Hanoi is beautiful with cool comfortable air.
- December-February: Cold in Hanoi (10-18°C in December-January — bring a jacket). Ha Long Bay still beautiful but morning mist can reduce visibility. February starts warming.
- March-April: Excellent for both Hanoi and Ha Long Bay. Warm, clear skies, comfortable for all activities.
- May-September: Hot and rainy in Hanoi. Ha Long Bay still accessible but afternoon thunderstorms common June-August.
Ha Long Bay is accessible year-round but most beautiful October-April when clear skies create perfect reflections of limestone karsts in the still water.
Phu Quoc and South Vietnam — November to April
South Vietnam has a straightforward dry season (November-April) and wet season (May-October). For Phu Quoc beach holidays, November to April is the only choice — calm, crystal-clear water, warm sunshine, consistently excellent.
- November-January: Peak dry season. Phu Quoc at its absolute best. Book hotels 2-3 months ahead — resorts fill up fast in peak season.
- February-April: Still excellent. Slightly less crowded. Better value on hotels.
- May-October: Monsoon season. Heavy rain and rough seas on Phu Quoc. Not recommended for beach holidays.
Best Timing for Indian School Holidays
- May-June holidays: Perfect for Da Nang, Hoi An and Central Vietnam. Peak beach season. Excellent for Ba Na Hills. North Vietnam hot but manageable. Avoid Phu Quoc (monsoon season).
- October-November holidays: Excellent for Hanoi and Ha Long Bay. Avoid Central Vietnam (typhoon risk). South Vietnam and Phu Quoc improving.
- December-January holidays: Phu Quoc and South Vietnam outstanding. Ha Long Bay atmospheric (misty). Da Nang has some rainy days in December but improves mid-January.
- March-April holidays: Best overall. Every region in excellent condition. Book early — peak international tourist season.
