Vietnam 7 Day Itinerary for Indians — The Perfect First Trip

April 12, 2025 10 min read By Sky Journey Tours — Da Nang, Vietnam

Seven days is the sweet spot for a first Vietnam trip from India. After planning this route for hundreds of Indian travelers, our Sky Journey Tours team in Da Nang has one clear recommendation: Hanoi + Ha Long Bay in the North, fly to Da Nang for Ba Na Hills and Hoi An in Central Vietnam. This covers Vietnam's three most iconic experiences without feeling rushed.

Before You Start — Essential Preparation

Apply for your Vietnam e-visa at least 7 days before departure ($25, 3 working days approval). Download the Grab app before landing — essential for safe, affordable transport across all Vietnamese cities. Buy a Viettel SIM card at Hanoi airport on arrival (₹200-300 for 10GB data).

Day 1 — Arrive Hanoi, Evening Exploration

Most Indian cities have afternoon/evening flights to Hanoi arriving 9:00-11:00 PM. After immigration (use e-visa dedicated lane — faster), take Grab to your Old Quarter hotel. Quick dinner at your hotel or a nearby pho shop — Pho Bat Dan on Bat Dan Street is open late, excellent pho for ₹100 per bowl. Sleep early — big day tomorrow.

Our team tip: Do not take taxis from inside the terminal — unlicensed drivers overcharge. Book Grab from outside the terminal doors.

Day 2 — Hanoi Full Day City Tour

Start at 7:30 AM. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (open 7:00-10:30 AM, Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday-Sunday only — closed Monday and Friday). Dress respectfully — no shorts or sleeveless tops. One Pillar Pagoda is adjacent (5 minutes). Ho Chi Minh Museum next door (30-45 minutes).

Mid-morning: Temple of Literature (Vietnam's first university, 1070 AD — beautifully landscaped, excellent photos, ₹200 entry). Lunch: KOTO restaurant on Van Mieu Street (nonprofit training restaurant, excellent Vietnamese food, vegetarian menu).

Afternoon: Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple (₹150 entry — cross the red bridge to the island temple). Old Quarter 36 Streets walking tour with guide. Evening: Bia Hoi Corner at Ta Hien and Hang Be Streets — authentic Hanoi street life. Beer ₹20 per glass. Try Nem Ran (fried spring rolls) and Banh Mi from street vendors.

For vegetarians in Hanoi: Nhat Ly vegetarian restaurant on Hang Bai Street and Tamarind Café on Ma May Street — both excellent and loved by Indian vegetarian clients.

Day 3 — Ha Long Bay Overnight Cruise (The Highlight)

Private car or tourist bus to Ha Long Bay pier (3.5 hours). Board cruise ship 12:00-1:00 PM. The first sight of the limestone karsts from the bow is a genuinely emotional moment — most people go quiet.

Afternoon: Kayaking through limestone caves and arches. Swimming at Titop Island (climb to the viewpoint — 15 minutes, steep, absolutely worth it — best panoramic view of the bay). Visit Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave — largest in Ha Long, 45-minute walk, extraordinary scale).

Evening: Sunset cocktails on deck (golden hour over limestone karsts — bring your camera). Seafood dinner on board — fresh squid, prawns and fish caught that afternoon. Inform the cruise of vegetarian requirements in advance.

Cruise selection is critical: Spend minimum ₹8,000-12,000 per person for a quality mid-range cruise. Budget boats under ₹4,000 use old vessels with small cabins and poor food. Our team inspects every cruise we recommend.

Day 4 — Ha Long Sunrise + Fly to Da Nang

Wake at 5:30 AM for sunrise on the bay — non-negotiable. The mist lifting from the karsts in morning light is the most photographed sight in Vietnam and genuinely unforgettable. After breakfast, cruise returns to port by 11:00 AM. Transfer back to Hanoi, afternoon flight to Da Nang (1 hour 15 minutes). Check in by 7:00 PM. If Saturday or Sunday: Dragon Bridge fire show at 9:00 PM.

Day 5 — Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge

Arrive at Ba Na Hills cable car station by 7:30-8:00 AM. This timing is critical — by 10:00 AM the Golden Bridge queue for photos is 30-45 minutes long. By 2:00 PM it can be over an hour.

Order of visit: Cable car up → Golden Bridge (45-60 minutes for photos from multiple angles) → French Village breakfast (pastries and coffee, genuinely good) → Linh Ung Pagoda → Fantasy Park (2-3 hours, loved by all ages) → Le Jardin d'Amour gardens → Cable car down by 5:00 PM. Budget a full day — not half a day.

Photography tip: Best light for Golden Bridge photos is 8:00-9:30 AM (soft morning light from east) and 3:30-5:00 PM (warm afternoon light from west). Midday harsh overhead light photographs less beautifully.

Day 6 — Hoi An Full Day

Leave Da Nang 8:00 AM, arrive Hoi An 8:30 AM. Buy Hoi An Tourist Pass (₹250/person) on Tran Phu Street — covers 5 heritage sites including Japanese Covered Bridge, Chinese Assembly Halls and ancient houses.

Ancient Town morning walk (go early — crowds build significantly after 10:00 AM). Afternoon: Basket boat ride in the Coconut Forest — Cam Thanh Village, 10 minutes from Ancient Town. The spinning circular bamboo basket boats and enthusiastic boatmen create laughter in every visitor. Book official cooperative boats (better maintained).

Evening: Hoi An by lantern light is one of Asia's most romantic sights. Lantern boat on Thu Bon River (₹400-600 for two, 45 minutes). Dinner at Morning Glory Restaurant on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street — excellent Vietnamese food including vegetarian options. Try Cao Lau noodles and White Rose dumplings (Hoi An specialties unavailable elsewhere).

For Indian food in Hoi An: Baba's Kitchen on Phan Chu Trinh Street — genuine Indian family cooking, proper rotis and curries.

Day 7 — Marble Mountains + Departure

Morning visit to Marble Mountains (20 minutes from Da Nang city). Take the elevator to the main platform (₹30). Walk through Huyen Khong Cave — sunlight streams through a hole in the ceiling creating an ethereal atmosphere around the Buddhist altar inside. Panoramic terrace for views over My Khe Beach and Da Nang city. Allow 1.5-2 hours. Transfer to Da Nang Airport for return flight.

🇮🇳 Sky Journey Tours Insider Tip

On Day 3, pack a separate overnight bag for Ha Long Bay — light with one change of clothes, swimwear, sunscreen, camera and medications. Leave your main suitcase in Hanoi storage at the cruise company's office. You do not need a full suitcase on a boat for one night. This small bit of planning makes the cruise experience significantly more comfortable.
